Woodworking is a beautiful art form that requires precision, attention to detail, and a great deal of patience. It is a craft that has been around for centuries, and while technology has advanced, the basic principles of woodworking remain the same. One essential tool in any woodworking shop is a good sanding system.
First and foremost, a good sanding system can save time and effort. Sanding wood by hand is a time-consuming process that requires a lot of physical labor. A sanding system, on the other hand, can automate the sanding process and reduce the amount of time it takes to complete a project. This can free up time for woodworkers to focus on other aspects of their craft.
Secondly, a good sanding system can improve the quality of the finished product. Sanding wood by hand can result in uneven surfaces, scratches, and other imperfections. A sanding system, on the other hand, can ensure a smooth and even surface that is free of imperfections. This is particularly important when working with fine-grained woods or when creating intricate designs.
Thirdly, a good sanding system can improve safety in the workshop. Sanding wood by hand can produce a lot of dust, which can be harmful to breathe in. A sanding system, on the other hand, can be equipped with a dust collection system that can capture the dust and prevent it from being inhaled. This can improve the air quality in the workshop and reduce the risk of respiratory problems.
Finally, a good sanding system can save money in the long run. Sandpaper is an essential tool for sanding wood by hand, but it can be expensive and wear out quickly. A sanding system, on the other hand, can be equipped with high-quality sanding belts or discs that last longer and are more cost-effective in the long run.
In conclusion, a good sanding system is an essential tool in any woodworking shop. It can save time and effort, improve the quality of the finished product, improve safety in the workshop, and save money in the long run. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced woodworker, investing in a good sanding system can make a significant difference in the quality and efficiency of your work.
Models
Models
The Premium model series of wide belt sanders uses customary, well-proven parallel sanding technology and delivers great results from solid timber sanding up to lacquer sanding applications, provided the requirements don’t include high gloss.
Durable and reliable
The construction of our Premium series of wide belt sanders has been refined for decades and provides great sanding performance even after many years in service or under harsh conditions. The moving upper section of the machine allows for a fixed working height. The machine can bear processing workpieces of up to 1000 kg (2000 lb) without any modifications. Versions with inlet height of up to 500 mm (20 inch) are available.
Easy handling
All operations and adjustments are easily attainable – depending on preference, Kündig Machines can be operated fully automatically, with custom automated sanding programs, or manually, by adjusting all relevant parameters on the go. The user interface is very intuitive and motivates each user to explore advanced options and features and therefore using these precision sanders to their full potential without hesitation. Built-in safety measures eliminate the risk of major accidental operating errors. Kündig sanders are well known and appreciated for their easy handling.
Our Brilliant series of wide belt sanders are often found in joineries, interior fitting companies and the like. They offer the same features as the Premium series but contain at least one unit with our patented oblique sanding technology. Simply put, Kündig’s exclusive oblique sanding technology does what experienced woodworkers do instinctively: Through pivoting of the sanding unit, the sanding grit’s cutting ability and belt life improves and undesirable sanding traces, which are so typical for almost all wide belt sanders, don’t show on the workpiece.
oblique is better
When sanding conventionally with oscillation, belt errors (grit outbreaks, belt wear marks) are running parallel to the conveyor direction along the workpiece. This leaves the operator with a very common problem: Oscillation traces. With the oblique sanding technology, these inevitable belt errors run slightly diagonally to the conveyor direction, thus the undesirable effect is evenly spread on the workpiece surface and has no visible impact on it anymore. This makes for much more homogeneous surfaces. In addition, raised wood fibers are being cut off much more efficiently thanks to the shearing cut effect.
The Advantages of Oblique Sanding
- Absolutely homogeneous surfaces
- No oscillation traces
- No raised fibers
- Significant reduction of scratches on cross grain workpieces
- Reduction of sanding belt consumption of up to 35%
- Less lacquer consumption due to less raised fibers
- Greatly improved surface quality
- Easy handling
Better surfaces, demonstrably
According to actual users, the oblique sanding technology is especially good for lacquer sanding. But it’s also great to use on cross-grain surfaces.
In real life use, the improved cutting ability allows for smaller grit sanding belts. When sanding with an oblique unit, sanding traces on the workpiece cancel each other with every rotation of the belt and become pretty much invisible to the human eye.
These are scientifically sound facts: When Dr.-Ing. Ingrid Fuchs from the Wood Technology Institute in Dresden did Tests on surface roughness, she found: “The fact that roughness values are smaller when using the oblique sanding technology as opposed to the classic parallel sanding technology is clearly visible.”
Oblique sanding units
Kündig Brilliant sanders have at least one oblique sanding unit. With traditional, parallel sanding units, even after short use, sanding belts show small damages, grit outbreaks and irregularities due to wear and clogging. These imperfections negatively affect the sanding image, particularly on delicate surfaces like lacquer or veneer. This inherent flaw of the parallel sanding process can be avoided by pivoting the sanding unit by 10°. Further advantages are the absence of oscillation marks, extended life of the sanding belt due to this error-tolerant procedure and significantly better sanding quality. For lacquer and veneer applications this technology is ground-breaking, but its great advantages are also very visible in window production or fine solid timber work.
Sanding pads
Pneumatic pad
Well proven sanding pad technology, especially for solid timber processing. A continuous air cell provides even pressure on the workpiece.
Segmented pad
The segmented pad is divided in segments either 35 or 22 mm wide. These segments are computer controlled and preferences can easily and thoroughly be adjusted by the operator. The electronically controlled, segmented pad is especially useful for taking care of those delicate workpiece edges on lacquered or veneered parts.
Pad options
Segments and therefore the sensing rollers at the machine entry are available in 35 or 22mm width. Depending on the material that needs to be sanded, a variety of sanding shoe hardnesses are available. Two different hardness shoes are included from the factory.
Segmented Pad Controls
A segmented sanding pad is an integral component of any lacquer wide belt sander. At Kundig, we do not only use 22mm (1 Inch) thin workpiece detecting rollers but the same small 22mm size sanding segments as well. Our software allows for easy and logical control of this complex precision instrument. In the upper part of the screen, the overall sanding pressure is adjusted. Below, the pressure on the workpiece edges can be regulated in percentage increments. Additional segments can even be added or subtracted on each side. Asymmetric adjustments, which means different edge pressure on each side, are possible as well. In order to specifically concentrate on either the front or rear end of the workpiece, the activation and retraction of the sanding segments can either be delayed or accelerated, which is easily controlled in the bottom window.
Behind this software is a refined control system that converts those user inputs with millisecond precision. This allows for accurate segment activation even at extremely high feed speeds (for example in furniture industry applications). This technology is available in our parallel, oblique and cross belt units.

Master – “out of the Box”
When it comes to sanding, the KUNDIG Master gets to the point. It contains the essence of our 75 years of experience in sanding technology. This means that it combines, “out of the box”, all the properties that are essential for the fast, reliable production of perfect surfaces. No more, no less. This core model has a generous working width of 1350 mm and is equipped with a calibration roller as well as a fine sanding pad unit and features a proven, robust construction that guarantees decades of high sanding precision. The quick and easy controls make for a great user experience.
The Features – To the point
Construction: The Master is in no way inferior to our other model series in terms of robustness and durability. It has the same solid construction, which makes all our machines investments with foresight that still reliably deliver precise sanding results even after many years of use.
Head Movement / Constant Pass Line: For a good three decades we have been equipping our machines exclusively with moving top sections. Why? Compared to classic table adjustment, it is more complex in design, but also better in many respects. The machine can be loaded with higher workpiece weights, it maintains its precision more reliably and you have the advantages of a constant working height.
Workpiece dimensions: The adjustment of the upper part, i.e. the passage opening, is motorized, finely adjustable via touch screen. The maximum passage height is at least 160mm. With a working width of 1350 mm, the Kundig Master has a generous and well-proven standard dimension.
Eco energy saving mode: The Kundig Master is equipped with our specially developed Eco* energy saving mode. This software regulates the power consumption depending on load. As soon as work breaks occur, the machine automatically switches to standby mode. It is then immediately ready for use again. This results in significant savings, without compromising performance.
The sanding units – a proven combination
The sanding units are based on the proven combination of a calibration roller and a sanding pad unit. The two versions in which the Kündig Master is available are distinguished by the fine sanding pad unit (see below). For a safe workpiece guidance there is a parallel spring-loaded steel pressure roller at the machine infeed and rubber pressure rollers between the sanding units.
Calibration unit (R): The calibration roller is a grooved rubber contact roller of proven hardness. It is ideally suited for calibration tasks, if necessary also with high stock removal rates. The level of the contact roller is adjustable to compensate for the thickness of the inserted abrasive grit.
Segmented sanding pad (E): With the E-Plus package, the fine sanding unit has a segmented, electronically controlled sanding pad with workpiece detecting rollers 35 mm wide. This allows an even more precise fine sanding in the edge area of the workpieces. The edge pressure of the sanding segments is automatically controlled, but can also be adjusted on the touch-screen in order to influence the sanding around the edges of the workpiece even more precisely. Here too, the graphite cloth insert can be changed quickly and easily.
Pneumatic sanding pad (P): As part of the Comfort package, the Master is equipped with a pneumatic sanding pad. The pressure of the inflatable sanding pad can be precisely adjusted by means of a regulator. Graphite cloth inserts can be replaced quickly and easily.
Operation – quick and easy
All parameters required for sanding are directly accessible on the clearly arranged touch screen. This includes, for example, the feed speed (3-15 m/min), the stock removal, the passage height / target thickness of the sanding result, as well as the segmented pad controls (E-Plus package). Alternatively, the Master can also be easily operated via rotary switch, analogue stick and buttons. The settings for perfect sanding are thus made in seconds. The workpiece thickness can be measured over the entire working width. Separate programs can be stored for repetitive sanding operations. Safety features such as the overthickness safety feature prevent gross operating errors and, thanks to the intelligent error diagnosis, the user is informed what brought the machine to a halt, if one happened to occur.
Technic
We build machines for all the sanding applications and materials one could possibly think of. Be it sanding with tolerances of just hundredths of millimetres, structuring with great reproducibility, sanding of abrasive materials, or contouring with the help of CNC sanding technology. We have experience with many different industry sectors and types of materials.
Technic Botop
Bottom and Top Widebelt Sanders
Industrial sanding applications are mostly output oriented. The needs for fast feed rates and high surface finish quality must somehow both be met. And sometimes, both sides have to be processed in just one pass. This can be achieved using Kundig top and bottom sanding machines.
Technic Brush
Brushing and Texturing Solutions
Besides calibrating and lacquer sanding, structuring of surfaces also has great importance to many of our customers. Precision requirements for texturing applications are becoming more and more important as parquet is now commonly installed with surfaces already finished, therefor height differences must be at a minimum. Hence brushing machines need to be as precise as wide belt sanders. Kündig brush units are adjustable and allow for compensation of brush wear that is so common in serial production. In addition to dedicated brushing machines, Kündig offers a variety of brush units that can be added to or implemented into their sanders.
Technic Cross
Crossbelt Sanding Solutions
Sanders including at least one cross belt unit, either inside or outside of the machine body. These machines are mainly used for lacquer/high-gloss work or the sanding of cross veneered surfaces.
Technic Vmax
Double-Oblique Sanding for Window Production
Two symmetrically arranged oblique sanding units forming the shape of a “V” allow for eliminating sanding traces even on delicate surfaces, such as lacquer or on window sashes with long and cross-grain sections. The combined oblique units generate, what could be described as, some sort of oblique cross-sanding. This allows for assembled window frames to be sanded using the whole working width, reducing vibrations on the frame and ensuring impeccable surface quality.
Technic CNC
3D-Contouring using a Widebelt-Sander
Contouring sanding technology with numerically controlled sanding units allows for high repeatability. This ground-breaking technology is mostly used in the ski and snowboard industry. World championship and Olympic victories in disciplines like alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping and snowboarding are being won with sports equipment processed with Kundig Technic CNC wide belt sanders.
Technic Precision
Extreme Precision Wide Belt Sanders for various materials
Sanding machines that are made to calibrate with tolerances of mere hundredths of millimetres. Kündig Technic Precision sanders meet even the strictest demands regarding overall precision and plane-parallelism, even on materials that are difficult to process.
Technic Industry
Sanders for Industrial Purposes
We provide sanding solutions for various industry sectors and types of materials and are able to adapt to almost all kinds of applications, even if this means developing a new specialised product or feature. We do as well have a great deal of experience with production line integrated machines and the challenges that come with it, like integration into all relevant control systems, providing excellent results even at very high conveyor speeds and handling the strain of three or four shift operation.
